Tips for becoming a good leader

Whatever your field of activity, to be a good leader you must master two major areas: the business in which you exercise your leadership and the management of image and people. However, these factors alone are not enough. A leader must possess a set of personal characteristics, such as confidence, charisma and boldness, as well as strategic and persuasive tools that enable them to reach employees, creditors, suppliers, partners and consumers.

In this article, we have gathered some leadership lessons from three of the world’s most prominent leaders of recent decades: Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, and Barack Obama, the first Black President of the United States.

Follow these tips and become a true leader!

  • Reading

Reading is essential for acquiring knowledge and mastering different areas of expertise. It broadens our minds and teaches us to reflect on problems from different points of view, helping us to understand situations more clearly and make more confident decisions.

  • Focus

After a deliberation involving discussion and group decision-making, define the objectives to be put into practice and eliminate everything you consider unfeasible, because more important than knowing what to do is knowing what you do not want to do.

  • Continuous improvement

Striving to become better at who we are and what we do is an important step towards good leadership. Updates should represent improvements to a product that is constantly evolving, rather than fixes for problems in a poor product. Whenever possible, ask yourself what you can do better — and then do it.

  • Simplicity

Simplicity is the key to success, so do not overcomplicate things. Products should be designed so that customers can use them easily. According to Steve Jobs, “it takes a lot of hard work to make something simple, to truly understand the underlying challenges and come up with elegant solutions.”

  • Confidence in your projects

Have confidence and inspire confidence in others. A good manager should be positive and confident about their objectives. If you believe in your project, other people will believe in it too.

  • Product quality

Focus on product quality and maintain high standards. Do not launch a product if you feel that the prototype does not meet your expectations.

  • Communication

A good leader knows how to communicate. A company manager must know how to communicate effectively with employees, creditors, suppliers, partners and consumers. To communicate masterfully, Barack Obama used a wide range of tools, including posters, television interviews, radio programmes, email marketing and social media.

  • Engagement

Learn from Barack Obama and develop persuasive leadership by using “we” instead of “I”. By using “we” in your communication, you make it easier for people to identify with you and support your cause.

  • Helping people

A good leader should use their position to help people, while also inspiring and encouraging employees to do the same. Do your part and contribute to humanity.

Being a leader is a role of great responsibility that requires dedication, practicality and a strong sense of direction. A good leader must know how to manage the business, but also how to guide employees so that they share the same vision, mission, values and objectives of the company.

For this reason, to make good use of your leadership, you should always seek to stay informed about what is happening within your company and remain in constant contact with your entire team, inspiring and motivating your employees on a daily basis and providing them with continuous feedback on their work.

Leadership and motivation are key to success.
